  • BUILDING ENVIRONMENTS
Thermal Comfort Investigations - Typically indoor air quality issues are often resolved by tackling the basic comfort requirements of the building personnel i.e. heating and ventilation requirements. It is not necessarily the lack of fresh air that causes a problem, but is often a result of a combination of factors. Poor air distribution due to a failing or unsuitable heating/ventilation system can lead to the feeling of stuffiness, elevated temperature and the increase in pollutant levels. Therefore, even if the appropriate volume of fresh air is delivered to the office, it may not reach the occupants in the way intended. Investigating temperature and humidity variations over an extended period can often assist with determining the reasons for feelings of ill health and can be used to identify problem areas within a building.

Lighting Assessments - Within HS(G) 38 it states that “the unsuitability of a buildings lighting system is dependent on an individual’s perception of the detail required to complete their tasks effectively”. Poor and inadequate lighting can affect the health of people at work causing symptoms such as eyestrain, migraine and headaches. EMSAS Ltd can provide assistance with this issue by undertaking a thorough assessment of existing lighting conditions that exist within the workplace. Illuminance on the task is assessed using a light meter and the results are compared to Illuminance ratios detailed within HS(G)38.
  • ENVIRONMENTAL DUST MONITORING
A number of environmental dust monitoring techniques can be used for reasons such as legal compliance, ISO 14001, investigation of neighbourhood dust complaints. These include:

Qualitative methods - %EAC ‘Beaman & Kinsgbury’ method, an indicative technique using percentage Effective Area Coverage. This method uses a semi quantitative approach and assesses the overall dust coverage of a pad over a period of time. It is also directional so potential sources and receptors can be identified in the event of high readings being established. This method uses vertical depositional directional gauges to capture deposited airborne dust particles on a ‘sticky pad’ which is analysed to provide the %EAC.

Quantitive methods Frisbee Type Gauge. A depositional method simple and yet accurate for the measurement of nuisance dust. Dust is collected onto a horizontally mounted capture container, dust samples collected are measured by washing the collecting container and foam insert through to a collecting bottle. The sample is passed through a pre-weighed filter, conditioned and re-weighed. The quantity collected over a known period can be calculated to give a deposition rate. We can also analyse the dust to determine content of particular substances.
  • WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENTS
Should you have a concern regarding the quality of potable water within the workplace EMSAS Ltd can provide a fast response sampling and collection service. Following analysis of the sample/s a detailed interpretive report will be provided where results will be compared with relevant guidance such as ‘parametric indicator values’ detailed within the European Communities (Drinking Water) Regulations 2007, to determine if the water quality within the workplace is considered acceptable.
